#4) Little Women <작은 아씨들, 2019>_그레타 거윅

 

Though I thoroughly admired and enjoyed Lady Bird, the coming-of-age indie that was Greta Gerwig’s solo directing debut, I wasn’t one of those who considered it a perfect masterwork or a clear harbinger of great films to come.

 

그레타 거윅의 솔로 연출 데뷔작이자 중요한 발판이 된 독립 영화 '레이디 버드'를 온전히 감탄하며 즐겼지만, 그를 두고 완벽한 걸작이라던가 앞으로 다가올 위대한 영화들의 분명한 전조라고 생각하진 않았다.

My fears when I heard she was taking on a big-budget period film based on a famous literary property were twofold: first, that her distinctive individual voice might be subsumed or blunted by a bland, studio-approved script, and second, that attempts to “modernize” or otherwise punch up the story’s already pronounced feminist angle would result in rah-rah, go-girl clichés that would be both ahistorical and glib.

 

그녀가 유명한 문학작품을 바탕으로 한 대규모 예산의 시대 영화를 찍고 있다는 이야기를 들었을 때 내가 느낀 두려움은 두 가지였다.

 

첫째, 그녀의 독특하고 개성이 있는 목소리가 건조하기 짝이 없는 '제작사 허락 도장'을 받은 대본에 의해 흡수되거나 약화될 수 있다는 것과

둘째, "현대화"하거나 이야기에 이미 확연한 페미니스트의 각도를 부각하려는 시도는 반역사적이면서도 입버릇이 날 법한 진부한 클리셰를 가져올 수 있다는 점이었다.

Neither happened, to a degree that seems unlikely in this era of *YA franchise fever.

 

YA 프랜차이즈 열풍의 시대에 있는 것 같지 않은 정도로, 두 가지 일은 모두 발생하지 않았다.

Gerwig’s thoughtful adaptation of this classic novel respects it as both a cultural milestone and a vibrant, living document, and the splendid cast of actors she chose has forever changed how I see some of these long-familiar characters.

 

(그레타) 거윅이 고전 소설을 사려 깊게 각색한 것은 해당 소설을 문화적으로 중요한 발전이자 활기차고 살아있는 문서로 존중하며, 그녀가 선택한 훌륭한 배우들은 내가 오래전부터 익숙한 캐릭터들을 바라보는 방식을 영원히 바꾸어 놓았다.
